Alister Jenkins

What did you read at University?

I read Philosophy BA (Hons) at The University of Nottingham

What were you looking for in your career?

I was looking for a challenging role where I could gain broad business exposure.  I was also looking for a position and structure that allowed me to progress quickly.

Why did you choose Digby Morgan?

I chose Digby Morgan as they are a recognised leader in HR recruitment.  I originally started my career in IT recruitment and while I learnt a lot very quickly, I was looking for a more professional consultative role where I could really build a career.  From the first telephone interview through to the assessment day I was thoroughly impressed with the professionalism that Digby Morgan presented and all the people that I met from the current graduates through to the directors were incredibly friendly and open.   I wanted to work for a brand that was held in high regard within its field of recruitment and I felt that Digby Morgan definitely filled this criteria.

Which division do you work in?

Resourcing £18,000-£50,000 permanent

Please describe a typical day

It is difficult to describe a typical day at Digby Morgan!  Usually I begin with checking the response to my current web advertisements.  I then contact candidates and arrange interviews.  Days can be very ad-hoc as a new role can be rung in at any time.  I also spend a lot of time developing client and candidate relationships through phone calls and visits.  This is one of the most enjoyable parts of my role (aside from placing candidates!)

What has your role at Digby Morgan given you from a self-development perspective?

Recruitment definitely has its ups and downs and the main thing I have learnt is that it is key to focus on the positives and not the negatives.  I have learnt to be resilient and dogged and have a can-do attitude.

What advice would you give to candidates thinking of applying to the Associate programme?

I think it is essential to research into working in recruitment as a consultant as it is a job unlike any other!  It is definitely a roller coaster ride and while the buzz of placing someone (and earning commission) is great, when things fall through (which they certainly will) you need to be able to pick yourself up and get going again!  The associate programme is a great way to gain recruitment experience in a friendly and supportive environment.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Digby Morgan so far and I work with some excellent consultants who I am learning from all the time.
